This beginner's guide will walk you through managing disk partitions and resizing them using the Disk Management utility in Windows Server OS.
Requirements
- A Windows VPS with the operating system installed.
Accessing Your VPS
[Log in to your VPS](https://) via Remote Desktop (Windows) or rdesktop (Linux).
Starting the Disk Management Application
You can access Disk Management in several ways:
Via Server Manager: Open Server Manager, navigate to the Tools tab, and select Computer Management. From the left-hand menu, choose Disk Management.
Right-Click Start Menu: Right-click on the Start button and select Disk Management.
Command Prompt: Open Command Prompt and run the command diskmgmt.msc
.
Using the Disk Management Utility
By default, the C: volume uses all of your VPS's disk space. To create additional partitions, you must first shrink the existing volume. Here's how:
- Right-click on the current volume or partition and select Shrink Volume....
- Enter the amount of free space to shrink in megabytes, then click Shrink.
This will create unallocated space, which you can use to create a new partition:
- Right-click the unallocated space and choose New Simple Volume....
- In the setup wizard, specify the size of the new partition, assign a drive letter, and configure formatting options.
- Once finished, the new volume will appear in the Disk Management utility and in the This PC window.
That's it! You've successfully created an additional volume. The Disk Management tool also allows you to delete, shrink, and extend volumes as needed, providing flexibility in managing your VPS's disk partitions.
